“This new society is glamorous in the way blood is red and money is green. Ocharovanye – glamour – is what the German philosophers call a categorical imperative, and they like German philosophers here. The lust for icy luxury extends from the energy billionaires down to wretches living six to a room. Everyone has a secret elixir – and they never save the bottle it comes in, either. Not every Natasha of the thousands hitting the streets is sold into white slavery. Not every heavily-tattooed convict zek has better things to do.  Some like their jobs – or at least, they flaunt the perks of the underworld. They say: ”Life is a prison from which it is sometimes possible to break out. But only temporarily.”

“In King’s Canyon National Park, California, chytrid fungus has swept through with a vengance. Shown are some of the last southern moutain yellow-legged frogs (Rana muscosa) as they lay dead from the fungus. The disease first appeared in this High Sierra basin in 2004, and has virtually wiped out the last stronghold metapopulations of this species. Where once tens of thousands lived, now fewer than 100 remain. “Worldwide, this is the worst case of a disease causing extinctions in recorded history, and we’re seeing the results of it right here,” said Vance Vredenburg, an amphibian ecologist who has studied the basin for 13 years.”
